AN appeal was today made for community-spirited people to come forward and solve a shortage of lollipop men and women.
Lancashire County Council currently has 26 vacancies - including six in Fylde and Wyre.

They are: Mythop Road/Park View Road in Lytham, Clarendon Road/St Anne's Rd East in St Annes, and four vacancies in Poulton at Garstang Rd East/Lower Green, Blackpool Road/Fleetwood Road South, Breck Road/Station Road and Moorland Road outside St John's School

County Coun Tom Burns, cabinet member for organisational development, said: "Being a school crossing patrol is a great way to serve your local community, while also earning a wage.

"It's a useful way to help your household finances, with some extra money, but still leaves people time for other important family tasks.

"For these vacancies we've identified that a crossing patrol is needed, but unfortunately we haven't been able to find anyone to fill the role. We are asking people to come forward and sign up.

"There is a national shortage of school crossing patrol wardens, so this problem is not just exclusive to Lancashire. If you think you might be suitable please contact us to find out more information."

The hours would suit people with time to spare in the morning or afternoon.

Candidates need to be reasonably fit and with good clear eyesight.

Crossing patrol wardens receive £6.08 an hour. Applicants should be aged between 17 and 74 years of age and in reasonable health.

Is this another New Labour failure at County Hall?

The lack of crossing patrol people is a real danger and needs addressing quickly. Let's hope that all our County Councillors can pile on the pressure to sort this ASAP.
