LONG-AWAITED plans for a residents' only parking scheme are on the back-burner – with Fleetwood set to benefit instead.
The area around Breck Road, Beech Avenue and Elletson Road in Poulton had long been earmarked for Wyre's first residents' parking scheme – with more than 60 signatures gained on a petition last year.

But the town's hopes appear to have been dashed
after the scheme failed to meet Lancashire County Council's criteria.

Residents say they suffer blocked driveways and poor visibility and are demanding a residents' parking scheme to prevent shoppers and rail passengers leaving cars on their street.

Michael Brown, of Beech Avenue, said: "It's annoying that we're not going to be getting this scheme.

"People park on these roads to get to the station – some cars have been parked here for two weeks while people go on holiday.

"Drivers park across driveways and some people park on the pavement and I've seen elderly people forced to walk up the middle of the road."

But the news has pleased people in Fleetwood, who have long called for a residents' parking scheme of their own.

Problem

The busy area around Fleetwood Market has been identified as a possible place for a pilot scheme which could eventually be a template for other problem areas in the borough.

Among the streets affected is Albert Street where news of the possible pilot was received with joy.

Pensioner Tom Anderton said: "I would be absolutely delighted if we got it down here.

"It's been getting worse.

"It's just ridiculous. We have people parking who go to the market and people from the bank on the corner park here all day."

Albert Street residents have become so frustrated by the situation that they put cones out to try and save spaces for themselves.

A Wyre Council spokesman said: "We plan to carry out a survey of streets in Fleetwood where there is known to be a parking problem.

"This is likely to be in the area around Fleetwood Market.

"We will look at the outcome of this survey with Lancashire County Council later this year."

The precise reasons why the Poulton scheme failed have not yet been released to the council.

Coun Clive Grunshaw, who has been campaigning for a parking scheme, said: "It's excellent.

"Hopefully it will be places like Albert Street, Custom House Lane and Kent Street in the area surrounding the market."

Symptomatic of the parking chaos that curses Poulton.
The car parks are too expensive and, as well as strangling the businesses, people then park on the side streets making life a misery for the residents.

well said cjack, if they reduced the car parking charges, more people would park there. still in Poulton they have the residents bays in the car park, suppose the residents should park there and let visitors park outside there houses.

Even a residents pass is £25 for each car and you have to pay this when you change your vehicle as well. How the hell it costs £25 to write a registration number on a piece of card I've yet to figure out.
As for people without a pass, well I pity them. Only on Saturday I saw two people looking at the charges on the notice by the ticket machine in the Teanlowe car park. They didn't pay..... they left. The car park was half empty on a Saturday afternoon when the place should be bustling.
The council, and Robert Posner (the genius in charge of all this), have a lot to answer for.

I agree, I havn't renewed my residents pass for my new car. There is nothing in Poulton worth paying to park for.

It seems the council has sadly fallen foul of the tempting ability to get money from its residents and visitors at every opportunity rather then doing the sensible, popular and right thing and actually keeping parking free in the town centre.
(Works for the Trafford Centre)
I wonder, does the cash raised by the parking charges and fines (another unecessary money spinner)cover the loss of business and the ill feeling created by those in the marble and gold building at the end of Breck Road?

with regards to parking permits,I am totally disgusted with the fact that it is classed as free residents parking on the teanlow car parks but in actual fact its not. £25 for a permit is a rip of for residents who pay rates. No wonder pensioners are getting the bus and using there FREE bus pass and going to Preston,Lancaster and Garstang to shop.It doing Poulton out of business. Why pay £25 to park locally. Its also costing the council more paying out for bus fares. Come on Council use a bit of common scense.
