Heavy rain causes flood chaos

WET weather caused havoc in Cleveleys this weekend, flooding a major road.
Large sections of Green Drive were underwater for several hours on Saturday afternoon after severe rainfall.

Cars and buses all struggled to make their way along the street and local residents say many pedestrians got soaked.

Green Drive resident David Hewitt said: "The street is often like this when we get moderate to heavy rainfall.

"I have been writing to United Utilities about this for several years now but we are still experiencing problems. You only need to look at the photographs to see the problem."

But it was all very different eight hours earlier.

At 5am a magnificent sunrise lit up the skies early before the heavens opened.

A spokesman from United Utilities said: "In times of extremely heavy rainfall, it can take some time for the excess water to drain from the street in this area. We will look into this, by checking the local sewer and water course to make sure there are no impediments which might affect drainage.

"We are spending £140 million across our network by 2010 to increase the capacity of sewers, so that they can cope better when there is extremely heavy rainfall. This work has to be prioritised to deal with the most pressing cases first."

Good to see the usual level of journalism is alive and well at the Gazette:

'At 5am a magnificent sunset...'

its time all drains on the fylde coast were throughly cleared out, never used to have this problem years ago, why now all of a sudden? because they won't clean out the drains.

Although I suppose you'd expect me to say this.... If the councty council had invested the extra £900,000 that the Conservatives wanted investing, we'd not have half the problems we do today. So even the rain (well sort of) is Labour's fault!

There are parts of Thornton & Cleveleys where this happens every time it rains a bit. I lived in one such road and United Futilities said it wasn't their problem. It is obvious that the drains cannot cope with their existing load. What can we expect if all those new houses get built? All that extra run-off. Fantastic, can't wait.

Is the responsibility for the drains the County Council's duty or that of United Utilites?

Standing water drains are the responsibility of the County Council in Lancashire or Blackpool Council in Blackpool. The sewer drains are UU.

The biggest problem with flooding is the gully drains not being cleaned out properly. As you can imagine allsorts gets deposited down there and they need sucking out to keep them free flowing.

There was a proposal to invest £900,000 into doing a proper job at the last budget meeting at County by using un allocated reserves. ( The county has millions in reserve!) However Labour voted down this proposal. So, yeah Labour are to blame.

Looks like United Utilites aren't to blame for this then and people need to direct this problem to the County Council and in particular the Labour Councillors. They do afterall get an enormous amount out of all our council taxes (unless you live in Blackpool) for tasks just like this.

Blame global warming. The council will and so wont do anything about it. In fact they will do something about it. They will have a lavish meeting at our expense and come to a resounding conclusion that they dont know what to do !!!!
