DRIVERS caught in daily tailbacks on a notorious stretch of Fylde road are to be saved from rush-hour gridlock.
A £200,000 project to cut congestion on the A585 near Esprick will start on Monday.
The Highways Agency is installing a dedicated right turn lane into the Shell petrol station near Greenhalgh Lane.
Engineers will widen a 300-metre section of the road so that through traffic is not held up by vehicles queuing to leave the busy A585.
The road is the main route into Fylde coast from the M55 and more than 23,000 vehicles use it every day.
But large queues – particularly at rush hour – are caused by drivers wanting to cross carriageways.
With no dedicated turning lane or traffic signals, it takes just one motorist wanting to turn right into the filling station to cause major hold-ups.
Highways Agency project manager Peter Hamer said: "We have a long-standing commitment to reducing congestion on the A585.
Overnight
"Providing drivers wishing to turn right with a dedicated lane will allow other vehicles to keep moving and significantly reduce queues and improve safety at the junction."
The agency says that when lane closures are necessary the road will be reduced to one lane. This will be done overnight and outside peak hours to cause minimal disruption.
Greenhalgh Lane will also be closed during the work with diversions clearly signposted via Back Lane and the A585. The work is expected to be complete by late March.
The A585 is currently subject to a public consultation exercise.
Esprick is on the route of three of the five options currently being scrutinised as highways chiefs attempt to end congestion problems.
Others include taking traffic away from the area through Staining and Grange Park or via Weeton to Singleton.
