VOLUNTEERS in rural Fylde are set to revamp Kirkham and Wesham railway station.
Members of the Wesham Community Pride Trust and Kirkham In Bloom are working together on the project to give the station a facelift.

Rail chiefs have already confirmed £50,000 will be spent revamping the booking office at the district station.

Group members also hope to refurbish the station entrance and carry out improvements to the steps and the platform – including painting benches and lamps.

Several meetings have taken place with the railway bosses to discuss how the two groups, with the help of Kirkham prison and Lancashire County Council, will tackle the programme of work which has been drawn up.

Kirkham councillor, Coun Liz Oades, said: "I believe we need to have a better station.

"When you come in on the train, the first view you get is not a good one. The station has been in a bad state.

"We want to improve the station for the travelling public and the people who live in Kirkham and Wesham."

Talks have taken place with rail bosses about finding alternative parking for passengers so cars are not left outside residents' homes on Station Road.

Other improvements include clearing vegetation and shrubbery and providing floral enhancements.

Volunteers are also working with Kirkham and Wesham Primary School so pupils' artwork can be displayed in the booking hall.

Is this not the same story that does the rounds every few weeks. Like when Liz Oades seems to have nothing better to do. I've heard this over a year ago, but up to now nothing news happened.

Also I feel that surely it's the train companys job to keep the station tidy, not a local busy body group.

Come, spend your time on getting the basics right like the condition of the roads, pavements and litter. This is just airy fairy stuff that'll never get done.

Absolutely Jonny, these groups are taken advantage of by these companies who know only too well that some local people will have pride in their town. We hear of the 'Friends of this' and the 'Community action group' of that too often. These people are doormats for the big guns and should spend their time exposing the tightness of these organisations and putting pressure on them to open their cheque books.....Shame on you Fat Cats

Having used the station, I am constantly amazed at the amount of rubbish that is collecting on the track itself. Certainly if the cans and bottles were collected alone, there would be asignificant improvement in the condition. But by leaving them there for all to see i feel only encourages kids to dispos of their drink refuse in similar manner. A lick of paint does nothing to brighten up an already neglected station. It used to have proper buildings and rubbish bins.

What is needed is the Booking Office moving 90 degrees to give the staff the chance to keep an eye down the steps to the platforms. Hopefully this should reduce the chances given to the local vandals/people hanging about etc.
