Published Date: 05 August 2008
A FRECKLETON woman is set to make a formal complaint to town hall bosses after a leading Fylde councillor told her: "I've limited patience for bigots".
The woman, who used the pen name Maria Charles, has complained to Tory party bosses after Coun Simon Renwick, portfolio holder for culture and tourism, repeatedly used the insult during a heated e-mail exchange.

'Ashamed'

The pair traded views after Maria – who wants to remain anonymous following the row – wrote a strongly worded message to the Wesham councillor saying he should be "ashamed" of the closure of St Annes pool.

The pool, which finally closed its doors on Thursday, was shut by council chiefs to save more than £700,000 over the next two years.

Coun Renwick claimed the Fylde taxpayer had made a "bigoted comment based on ignorance" while criticising a new £40,000 skate park in Wesham.

Maria, who Coun Renwick threatened with police action following the exchange, wrote to Coun Renwick after receiving an e-mail sent to constituents about the skate park.

She replied saying the money should have instead been spent keeping the St Annes baths open.

She said: "I am really angry about it. I know I am not a bigot. Swimming is something everybody can do. All I wanted to do is keep the pool open, not get involved in politics.

"I was really upset about being threatened with the police. I have never been in any kind of trouble before.

"I'm just not that kind of person."

Coun Renwick made the accusation after Maria said she "dreaded" to think about the activities that would happen at the skate park and said it would only be used by a minority of people.

Coun Renwick said: "This was a robust response to a robust e-mail.

"She was particularly derogatory to young people.

"I believe there was a certain amount of bigotry in her response. I can understand she is upset about St Annes baths.

"We are all sad about the pool being closed but it can't stop other activities for young people being pursued."

If a formal complaint is made, the exchange – which lasted for six days last month - would be analysed by a Fylde Council standards sub-committee.

A council spokesman said: "The sub committee, which include independent lay people and parish representatives, considers whether complaints about councillors should be referred for formal investigation."

The email

Maria: "I think this is disgusting when St Annes pool is about to be closed – you should be ashamed of yourself."

Coun Renwick: "Tell me please why I should be ashamed of myself. What is shameful is spending £500,000 a year on a pool
no-one uses. What is shameful is a government that won't allow us to raise the money we need."

Maria: "How will you know how many people use your skatepark...
I dread to think of the type of activities that usually occur around places like that."

Coun Renwick: "I would so like to show you how you are wrong, but I have limited patience for bigots."

Frustrated,

St Annes 05/08/2008 09:09:29
Well given the trouble around Fairhaven Lake I think Maria may have a point - SOME people attracted to skate parks cause trouble (most skaters I've met aren't trouble-makers, in fact I don't think the trouble-makers actually skate at all). Does that make me a bigot too? Should I be threatened by the police being called in? And if so for what criminal offence?

This is just the sort of case to show why most decent people don't want to be involved in politics. And the costs Simon? One minute it costs £930k a year, then it costs £500k a year and closing it down will save £700k over 2 years. What are the correct figures?

Typical politico response. Don't let facts get in the way of avoiding the issue. I have no doubt in my mind who is in the wrong here.

Frustrated,

The 930K a year is the total cost for St Annes and Kirkham Pools according to the council's projected savings closure of St Annes pool will save 500k in a full financial year. Because the piool operated until the end of july the saving for this year is around the 200k mark that's where the 700k comes from.
I don't know much about the council but this is the reported breakdown over the last few months as reported in the gazette. i'm sure the council will correct me if i'm wrong.

If you don't want a heated exchange, don't start it Maria. It's people like you who give ALL young people a bad name and accuse them of bad behaviour just because they hang around at a skate park with their friends. Let me assure you that its the people that hang around the streets that are up to something untoward, not the ones on skate parks. If you like swimming that much, go to one of the hotels in St Annes, most of them have their own pools. Spend the money on the kids skate park - it will give them somewhere to play!

Lol, North Shore,

slightly off topic, but why build a skate park????? we live by the SEA teaching the young to swim in coastal areas is vital, teaching them to skate much less so.

surely renwick should be made to resign.if anyone should be calling the police its maria.the facts are youths in blackpool and fylde/wyre cause trouble on parks we read about robberies and assaults on stanley park frequently also there are reports of noise disturbances at fairhaven surely marie has a justifiable concern? as for the swimming pool issue i cant ever remember a case of assault and or robbery at a swimming pool i know where i would rather send my kids,do the right thing renwick and resign or maybe show us how we are wrong!!!perhaps the gazette is making all these stories up in collusion with the police to make the fylde coast less appealing to tourists?
