FLEETWOOD Town have signed promising Blackpool midfielder Matty Kay on loan.
And the new man is lined up for a debut tomorrow as Fleetwood entertain Stalybridge Celtic in an important Blue Square North clash.

Manager Micky Mellon has had a busy 24 hours - he has also secured the services of former Blackpool and Tranmere Rovers stopper Eric Nixon as the club's goalkeeping coach.

Mellon has been an admirer of Kay for some time and is delighted to have secured a player of his calibre on a month's loan.

The Fleetwood boss said: "Matty has the ability to do things in midfield that I want a player to do - he is very mobile and aggressive.

"He is a very talented lad who could have sat back, just played with Blackpool reserves and trained with the first team - but he wants to out on Saturday afternoon playing for points, which is a credit to him.

"This is a chance for Matty to kick-start his career."

Kay, 19, created a stir in November, 2005 when new manager Simon Grayson named him among his subsitutes in the 5-2 win over Scunthorpe.

Kay, then a schoolboy, came off the bench late on in Grayson's first match in charge, so becoming the youngest player to represent Blackpool in a League match.

At 16 years, 32 days, he took the record from Trevor Sinclair, who was 16 years, five months when he made his league debut at the start of the 1990s.

Kay reputedly caught the attention of Premier League clubs, among them Tottenham, who reportedly made an approach for the talented midfielder.

He opted to sign a deal with the Bloomfield Road club in June 2006.

Mellon will renew assocation with Nixon - the duo played together at Bloomfield Road and Prenton Park.

Nixon has been based in Dubai of late, and Mellon said: "We have two very talented young keepers at Fleetwood and Eric will be a big help to them.

"The chairman (Andy Pilley) has backed me up by agreeing to bring Eric in - he will be at the match tomorrow."

Mellon has made a favourable impact at Highbury since replacing Tony Greenwood, and the latest test of the progress he has made will be provided by Stalybridge.

Mellon is steadfastly refusing to draw any sort of positive conclusions from Stalybridge's FA Cup home demise at the hands of Durham City when they lost 6-1, earning the unwanted distinction of their worst defeat in 20 years.

In fact, such a home humiliation could serve galvanise Stalybridge, according to Mellon, and make them all the more determined to put such a shocking loss behind them.

The Fleetwood boss said: "It is probably the worst possible time to be facing them, because their manager will be looking for a reaction.

"I am taking no notice of that result, except to say that it will probably make it more difficult for us.

"In any case, Stalybridge are fourth in the league - and the table does not lie."

Fleetwood resume league action after the defeat in midweek, 3-2 at the hands of Barrow in the Setanta Shield, Mellon's first reverse as manager and a game in which the visitors played much of the tie with 10-men after the sending-off of Ricky Mercer.

Mellon said: "Though we lost, I was delighted with the performance at Barrow - we played with the kind of tempo and control that I have been looking for, and we 'won' the second half 1-0."

Mellon refused to go into details over the player he was trying to get on board on loan, but said: "If we can manage to complete the deal, then it will be a very exciting signing for the club."

Fleetwood are hoping to have Mark Peers available again shortly after injury.
