A GROUP of railway campaigners have given their backing to plans to re-establish a rail link between Poulton and Fleetwood.
Fleetwood-based Rail Link 84 was set up in 1984 in a bid to re-open the line for both passenger and freight carriages and held talks with British Rail to push for the track to re-open.
They ensured the defunct line was not demolished by campaigning
for the re-alignment of the A585 which protected the town's rail corridor.
Approval
And now, with the rail link back on the agenda thanks to the efforts of the Poulton and Wyre Railway Trust who want to re-open and takeover the running of the track, Rail Link 84 officials have given their seal of approval.
John Harrison, secretary of Rail Link 84, said: "We welcome the activities of other rail groups based out of Fleetwood, especially as they advocate using steam locomotives.
"We have always said that the line can be part of the attraction and not just a means of transport."
Support is gathering for the re-opening of the line following continuing problems with congestion on the A585 road which links the two towns.
Many residents, as well as councillors and county councillors, believe the rail could help ease the amount of traffic on the vital road.
It is also being looked at as a means of reducing frieght traffic on the A585 which is expected to increase when a new £600m power station opens in Thornton in 2012.
A provisional report by Network Rail into the feasibility of re-opening the line is expected to be presented to Wyre Council this month.
