A PARAMEDIC today revealed she has been emotionally scarred for life by a sex attacker who pounced while she gave him medical care.
The 42-year-old woman was assaulted as she was treating Stuart Stokes for a foot injury.

It was as the paramedic – who has asked to be known as Mary, not her real name – was taking her patient's blood pressure that he groped her.

Stokes, 22, formerly of Bute Avenue in North Shore, Blackpool, yesterday pleaded guilty to sexual assault when he appeared at Preston Crown Court yesterday.

Mary spoke about her experiences as part of the launch of the North West Ambulance Service's Stop Abuse campaign - on the same day her attacker was sentenced.

Mary admits she now treats patients differently following the attack.

She said: "It will always be there at the back of my mind. Although what happened to me was quite minor in terms of assault, it was so out of the blue.

"I've been on the road with the service for four years and nothing like this has happened to me before.

"You come to work to do your job and you don't expect to be assaulted.

"It had a big effect on me. It has made me more wary and suspicious.

"For quite a while, I did not enjoy coming to work and I usually love my job.

"I am certainly now more aware of what can happen. I tend to look out for my colleagues now and watch for signs of trouble."

Stokes, now of Plymouth, was sentenced to a community order for two years with supervision.

He must also attend a programme to address substance-related offending and has been placed on the Sex Offenders' Register for five years.

Stokes, who had been drinking that night, was told by the judge: "It was unpleasant drunken groping by someone in a bad temper and you took advantage of the situation that presented itself."

When interviewed, the court heard, Stokes said he was "too drunk to remember and apologised".

Paul Humphries, defending, said it had been "the biggest wake up call in his life."

Mary now hopes to put the incident behind her.

She said: "Even though it was 12 months ago, the court case has only just finished, but I am hoping to be able to put it behind me now he has been sentenced.

"I am pleased he has been sentenced as a punishment, as well as being put on the Sex Offenders' Register. I'm glad he has been brought to justice.

"Hopefully now I can put it behind me, but it will always be at the back of my mind and I will always be more on my guard."

Fylde ambulance boss Dave Rigby said: "I think it's good the courts took this seriously and it sends out the right message – that you cannot assault members of the emergency services and if you do, you will be brought to justice.

"Alcohol is not an excuse."

I think this is a bit OTT. Someone jumping on the bandwagon of paramedics/firefighters being physically attacked. Groping a nurse was good fun in the '70s as depicted by the film Carry On Nurse. Don't get me wrong ... I'm not saying it is right, or Stokes should not have recieved punishment. The effects and the story in the paper just seems a bit overblown.

So you will be ok for someone to "grope" your wife or mum then "The wheels have fallen off".

I have so muct respect and admiration for Paramedics and the Fire Service, they risk their lives without question and this is how they are treated.

Anybody who obstructs them or assaults them should be given a very harsh punishment!!!!

no one deserves to be treated this way, no matter what line of work they are in. its nice to see justice brought for "Mary" and I hope she does manage to put it behind her.

Zimflyer - read the post - "Don't get me wrong ... I'm not saying it is right, or Stokes should not have recieved punishment."

All I mean is, is it worthy of a story in the paper headed 'Abuse agony'

So, as for your question - no it wouldn't be OK for someone to grope my wife or mum, as it wasn't right for Stokes to Grope Mary (as I have said) - but if someone did I think my wife would get over it and you wouldn't be reading about it in the paper!

The wheels have fallen off....Sounds as tho you either Dont care what happens to your wife or you hold her in very low esteem.
People should be allowed to go about their business without having to worry about being assualted/abused.When medics are abused or assaulted dependant on the extent they could be in hospital for a while. That means presumably the that ambulance is not able to attend other calls, meaning some poor suffering soul somewhere could be waiting an amount of time due to some idiots actions..Oh i do hpe your wife reads your comments!!

I agree with The Wheels have Fallen off. In terms of assault as "Mary" herself says this is minor. Surely a case could be reported where a more serious assault took place. Reporting minor incidents like this lessen the impact of the problem. It's not right she was groped, she was right to pursue it and it serves him right he got placed on the Sex Offenders Register - but worse things happen and surely these need to be highlighted.

LOST - read the post "Someone jumping on the bandwagon of paramedics/firefighters being physically attacked"

Your comment about being physically attacked and being in hospital etc is precisely what I was trying to flag up. There is some serious stuff going on out there and this story isn't worthy of headline news and undermines the seriousness of what else is going on. Next it will be 'Abusive patient called me Fat, now I can't go to work'

PS my wife is a bit more lighthearted than you and Zimflyer. She thinks we are ALL nuts.
